Despite hospitals and surgeons claiming that an osteoarthritis patient is able to walk normally within a week of operation, it may take several weeks for the patients to recover from the surgery.

Soon after total knee replacement, patients are advised to undergo a combination of physical and occupational therapy at the hospital itself. The therapy may continue for days after the patient is discharged from the hospital. Typically, a total knee replacement patient is required to stay in the hospital for three to five days after the surgery.

The patients start to walk or stand, with the help of a walker or without support, when they leave the hospital. The rehabilitation and recovery continues for at least two months after the surgery. Along with occupational and physical therapy, some set of exercises is often recommended to be performed at home for quick recovery.

By the end of eight weeks, the patients are expected to stand and walk properly without any support and resume doing household work. However, recovery could be slow in some patients. Patients are often asked to avoid squatting and complete bending of the knee.

Question 4: What exactly happens during knee replacement surgery?

During the knee replacement surgery, the surgeon encases the shin bone with plastic and the thigh bone with a metal casing. All this is done under the influence of general anesthesia. Prosthetic implant is then used to replace the worn out, irregular surface of the knee bone.

The surface under the knee cap is also replaced with plastic. This is done to ensure smoother movement of the joints after the surgery and to reduce pain. Overall, the surgery includes removal of some natural cartilage and bone.

Either cement or some other material is used to join the artificial parts or implants with the shin bone, thigh bone and knee cap. After setting, the artificial parts form joints that depend on the surrounding ligaments and muscles for support and proper functioning.

Question 5: Am I eligible for knee replacement?

You are eligible for knee replacement surgery if you are above 50 years of age and suffer from severe arthritis of the knee. The conditions should be so severe and painful that makes it impossible for you to stand or walk properly or hinder with the daily routine of activities.

Patients with damaged knees due to an accident, with no gap between the knees and those with severely restricted movement are perfect candidates for this type of surgery.

Question 6: Is it a safe procedure?

Knee replacement has been there as an option for more than four decades now. It is a safe procedure, however, like all other surgeries, it has risks too. Apart from blood clots, infection and bleeding, there are certain things that the surgeon should pay particular attention to while performing the surgery.

In any relationship there is the presence of two constants. The first is the concept of quid pro quo. This is a Latin term meaning "something for something." In a more common understanding it simply means a barter for an exchange.

Quid pro quo in its simplest form is no more than the common exchange of "good morning." Party A extends this greeting and the return is Party B saying, "yes, good morning". This is an exchange and it began with what we call a common courtesy. Of course, quid pro quo can be far more complex than this. My only point is every relationship has the constant of quid pro quo.

A Barter for an Exchange

Now some may ask where is the barter in that example? Well, barter is defined as the action or system of exchanging goods or services without using money. Some definitions use the word commodities instead of the word services. A commodity is something of great value. Who can argue common courtesy is not something of great value?

So yes, every relationship has a constant of quid pro quo. Now one may say "I do what I do with no expectation of return". That is not quite honest. The expectation, in this instance, is your actions will bring a visible and sincere joy to another. There is the exchange, your actions bring joy to another. You in return get to see the other's joy. It becomes even better when the other demonstrates their appreciation.

The Other Constant

Which brings us to the other constant. That is reciprocity. Reciprocity is the practice of exchanging things with others for a mutual benefit. In other words, I do for others with the understanding that later in time they will do for me.

Now do not confuse this. We do not do for others always with a hidden agenda or motive. Often we do what we do out of kindness. However, the act of kindness towards others often motivates the desire to do for you. That is how we come to the phrase, "I owe you one."

So Why Currency?

So what does all this have to do with currency? Currency, or money, is simply a symbol of the constants above. However, I would submit currency is more than a symbol. It is a phenomenon.

We accumulate currency so that when we need something we have something to offer for what we need. It is that simple! It works the same in relationships. We accumulate currency by doing deeds for or giving desirable objects to another. One very desirable object is appreciation and or gratitude. Gratitude expressed through an attitude of thankfulness. If we practice this, we are building currency.

With sufficient currency we can often get what we need or even want. So the idea is to make frequent deposits so that when we need to make a withdraw we have currency available.

Conflict and Currency

I have clients that are in conflict with each other. Conflict places burdens on the constants. When one is in conflict it mitigates against the free flow of currency. It replaces the constants with a concept called Entitlement. Entitlement is the feeling or belief that you deserve to be given something (such as special privileges). There is no need for reciprocity or even quid pro quo. This idea of entitlement often exists whether merited or not. Hence, giving way to the cycle of conflict.

Conclusion

My suggestion! Think of your checking account. You deposit currency so when necessary you can make withdraws. No deposits, no available currency. Then just when you want, or need it, the most, instead you get that dreaded Notice of Insufficient Funds.

That is the currency of relationships.

Perhaps the biggest problem with crony capitalism is how it hurts our small business job growth engine which thus, determines the very strength of our economy. When a corporation finds a political bed fellow in Washington DC, they can request legislative changes in the law that favor them and hurt their smaller competitors. I am not complaining about the system, it is better here than in other countries - at least there is the illusion of free enterprise, rather I am just 'observing humans in their natural habitat,' this world of modernity overlay on what is basically the same human brain DNA sequencing with the same physiological needs from the last 20,000 years, or last 5,000 if you are a Christian.

So do we bother to follow the money, if so, do we follow the alcoholic bum into the liquor store to prove ourselves right? Do we put more regulations on corporations, lobbyists, small businesses? That's probably worse, we make the system even more inefficient. Should we just reduce regulations and not give corporations an advantage, I mean they don't need an advantage, they already have one - it's size - law of bigness - it's practically a natural law of the jungle right?

Do we watch every business with massive surveillance? Do we profile everyone who runs a business, even if our modeling is based on false axioms of logic, only to find we locked the door and threw away the key to our success by trashing on the integrity of the last honest standout? Are all corporations bad?

No. Do they do what's in their best interests, of course? Doesn't everyone for the most part do what is or what they perceive to be in their best interests at the time, to get what they want? The question is why do we allow our politicians to accept bribes in the form of lobbying? If we prevented that our free-market system would be preserved far better and in a more efficient manner as well.
